Although when we think of calisthenics we typically think of the gymnastics moves it incorporates and what bar athletes do on a horizontal bar, technically speaking, yes, pole dancing is calisthenics.
Calisthenics is defined as being performed with minimal equipment and using only one’s own body weight for resistance. It can also refer to exercises that are characterized by their simplicity of execution and lack of apparatus used in performance.
This definition tells us that pole dancing is calisthenics because it uses little equipment to provide resistance other than a pole and your body.
It is also known as an acrobatic sport, but some of the movements used in this type of dance (like spins and tricks) can be considered calisthenics.
No Pole No Bodyweight Workout!
However, true calisthenics can be performed anywhere and at any time, without the need for special facilities or equipment. This is not true for pole dancing because, without the pole, there is no pole dancing.
Calisthenics Training Can Help You Become A Better Pole Dancer
Pole dancing uses many of the same muscle groups as calisthenics training, so it can be a great way to introduce more strength and coordination exercises to a routine.
You can also try using a resistance band to increase the intensity of some of your favorite moves, but remember to always be careful when doing strength training.
