What You Should Know Before Buying A Dance Pole

If you’re thinking about buying a dance pole, there are a few things you should know first:

  • Pole Metal Material
  • Pole Diameter
  • Pole Length (Adjustable Height)
  • Static or Spinning (or both)
  • Pole Installation Type

Pole Metal Material

Different Dance Pole Materials (Chrome Dance Pole)

You will commonly see a few different materials used in the construction of dance poles and there are advantages and disadvantages to each material, so it’s important to know the difference before making your purchase.

Chrome Dance Poles

Chrome poles are the most popular type of dance pole and are often used in professional settings. They have a very smooth surface, which makes them ideal for spinning and inverting moves.

However, they can also be more slippery than other types of poles, so if you’re a beginner, you may want to consider another option.

Stainless Steel Sance Poles

Stainless steel poles are another popular option and are a good middle ground between chrome and brass. They offer a good grip and are less slippery than chrome, but can still be used for spinning moves.

Brass Dance Poles

Brass poles are the least popular type of dance pole, but they offer the best grip out of all the options. This makes them ideal for beginners or those who are learning new moves. However, they are not the best for spinning moves.

Pole Diameter

The diameter of the pole is also an important consideration, as it will affect things like grip and stability. Most dance poles have a standard diameter of 45mm, but you can also find 50mm, and 40mm options.

If you’re not sure which size to choose, 45mm is the industry standard and is likely to be the size you’ll find in most studios and at competitions.

If you have a small grip, you may prefer a 40mm pole. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide what feels best for you. Experiment with different sizes and diameters to find the perfect pole for your dancing.

Pole Length (Adjustable Height)

Most dance poles will be adjustable in height to ensure safety for the dancer. For removable poles, dance pole heights typically range from 7’3″ to 9’3.

However, by using the right extensions on a portable pole, one can go as high as 11’10”. For freestanding stripper poles, heights usually only go up to 9’6″.

The limit for permanent poles is dictated by the height of your ceiling. Therefore, it is important that you find a pole that meets your needs in regards to both portability and ceiling height restrictions.

With such a variety of options available, there is sure to be a perfect fit for everyone.

Static or Spinning (or both)

Dance poles come in two different types – static and spinning. Static poles are the most popular type of pole, as they are ideal for beginners. Spinning poles are more advanced and can be used for more complicated moves.

Most dance poles on the market can also be used in both static and spinning mode, so if you want room to grow, you may want to consider a pole that offers both options.

Pole Installation Type

There are two main types of dance poles – removable and permanent. Removable poles are the most popular type, as they can be installed and removed without damaging your ceiling. Permanent poles are more expensive and require a professional installation, but they offer a more secure grip and are less likely to wobble.

If you’re just starting out, we recommend a removable pole. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you can always upgrade to a permanent pole later on. Likewise, if you are just trying the hobby out or are concerned about installing a permanent pole in your rented home, then a removable option is best for you.

You can also get a standalone/freestanding pole which are typically more expensive and require more room for the weighted base. However, these poles work well for anybody concerned about the ceiling type or height in their home as they don’t need to be installed.

If you have a slanted ceiling and are concerned about how to install a dance pole on a slanted ceiling, you will be pleased to know that there are vaulted ceiling mounts that specific brands are compatible with.
